After interviewing several small and medium scale farmers, we had determined that the following is the need of the market: No tracking or visibility of Poultry Environment: There is limited to no easy tracking of vital bird house environment parameters. Currently prevalent systems are deployed in-house & track only Temperature & Relative Humidity. The farmer has not real-time visibility of this data, unless he goes inside the farm and checks the data. Incident Management: Farmers are unable to react in time to avert accidents or loss of chicken in case of emergencies as information is not available real-time and there is no alert mechanism. For example: Ammonia is a very vital parameter, and it indicates the health and good grown of chicken. Exposure to high levels of Ammonia for longer periods of time affect the bird’s respiratory apparatus and this in turn hampers the growth of the bird. A timely alert in the middle of the night will help the farmer avert this danger in time. Bird Weight Tracking: Tracking of the bird’s weight is a difficult task and is often performed by the farm workers. The farm workers often pick the biggest of birds to measure the weight, out of fear of reprimand by the farmer. This does not give the farmer a true picture until it is too late. There are bird weight tracking systems available however they are not integrated as part of a comprehensive system and only work in isolation. Farmers will greatly benefit from an integrated platform where they can track the weight, feed & other parameters which is most likely to provide key insights, as regular data comes in. Variance in Weight of Chicken: Farmers state that the weight of the chicken, based on which they get paid, is varying for each batch, despite the inputs such as feed, medicine, labour costs etc remaining the same. They are unable to determine the reasons behind the same. Chick weighing at harvest: while loading is quite laborious and often error prone with farmers having to measure and aggregate their weight of 10,000 chicks and no place to store or track this information. Difficulty with Labour: Labour is difficult to come by and even more difficult to retain. Often times in the region, labour is also undocumented. This causes troubles for both the farmer and labour. Poultry House monitoring is a 24/7 job and the farmers today have to employ 3 to 4 people to man their barns. This is significantly adding to the operational costs of the farmer, particular in volatile times when feed prices see a steep increase.
