MeMoSA® (Mobile Mouth Screening Anywhere) is an AI-powered digital health platform for screening and early detection of oral cancer. The MeMoSA® app was first developed in 2017 by Cancer Research Malaysia as a teleconsultation tool to seamlessly bridge primary healthcare practitioners to specialists when encountering patients with oral lesions. Now, the app can be used by both healthcare volunteers and healthcare professionals to provide accessible screening services to patients, anywhere. Within the app, users take a photo of an oral cavity, and an integrated AI component analyses the quality of the photos and informs the user if the image is of sufficient clarity for remote reading, or if the quality is insufficient and needs to be retaken. Patients can then submit their images and will receive feedback from dentists or dental specialists, along with a referral recommendation, if applicable, when there is a lesion at risk of becoming oral cancer. This allows screening for oral lesions to be done at a larger scale and increases access to early detection for our communities regardless of whether they live in urban or rural areas. The MeMoSA® Workbench platform allows exportable real-time analytics of comprehensive data on screening performance and case updates for healthcare providers. The upcoming MeMoSA® app update is set to incorporate another AI algorithm capable of automatically classifying oral lesions based on images taken through the app, further enhancing its diagnostic capabilities for use as a decision support tool by healthcare professionals.
MeMoSA® is the first Malaysian digital health tool for remote consultation that facilitates screening and identification of oral lesions for early diagnosis of high-risk oral lesions and oral cancer. The app also incorporates easy and efficient teleconsultation and appointment scheduling with dental specialists.
Integrated AI models, using probabilistic and mathematical models as well as morphological processing, are incorporated in the MeMoSA® app. This enables robust image capture, with a performance of 85% for the prediction of image quality. The high accuracy achieved allows better reliability on teleconsultation through the MeMoSA® app.
MeMoSA® features a one-stop ‘Workbench’ platform, optimized for research use, that displays clear and immediate data on public health insights, screening activity, and performance. Organisations using MeMoSA® can visualise patterns and trends in screening practices and maximize efficiency to improve patient outcomes.
The MeMoSA® app ensures reliable and secure transfer of patient information, tailored for both Android and iOS mobile devices, enabling wide implementation of MeMoSA®.
MeMoSA® enables the implementation of digital health to reduce geographical and socioeconomic barriers to diagnosis and care for oral disease, and reduces reliance on on-site diagnosis by dental specialists, a key issue in rural or remote areas. This is a key step to achieving equitable access to healthcare, particularly for underserved communities in rural or remote areas. The app can be used in offline mode if necessary, and images will be uploaded when a connection has been established.
We offer a range of service packages to accommodate various needs and budgets, including end-to-end support for organisations and partners implementing MeMoSA®. Each service is modular and customisable to meet the specific needs of clients in both public health and private sectors, so every client can manage costs effectively while still receiving services that best suit their requirements.
