The Modified Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Internal Bracing (MUIB) Allograft (Multi-Ligament) is a specialized ligament reconstruction construct designed to address the complex mechanical and biological requirements of multi-ligament knee reconstruction, particularly in cases involving combined Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), and/or collateral ligament injuries. The construct utilizes appropriately selected human allograft tendon tissue, combined with high-strength synthetic internal bracing components, to provide mechanical reinforcement and support during the early postoperative period.
A key feature of the MUIB Allograft is the integration of biological allograft tissue with an internal bracing system to create a reinforced reconstruction construct. The allograft provides the biological framework for ligament reconstruction, while the internal brace functions as a load-sharing reinforcement structure to enhance initial mechanical stability and help protect the reconstructed ligament(s) from excessive strain during the early stages of healing and rehabilitation.
In multi-ligament injuries, where several stabilizing structures of the knee may be compromised simultaneously, achieving adequate mechanical stability is particularly challenging. The MUIB Allograft is designed to provide additional structural support across the reconstructed ligament(s), with the objective of reducing excessive graft elongation and postoperative laxity while biological incorporation, revascularization, remodeling, and ligamentization of the allograft take place. This reinforced approach may support a more controlled rehabilitation pathway while addressing the increased mechanical demands associated with multi-ligament reconstruction.
The construct is particularly suited for orthopedic surgeons performing complex multi-ligament knee reconstruction who require a reinforced allograft-based solution that provides enhanced early mechanical stability. The principal beneficiaries are patients with complex ligament injuries requiring reconstruction of multiple knee ligaments, for whom the availability of suitable autologous tissue may be limited or insufficient to reconstruct all injured structures. By combining donor-derived biological tissue with high-strength internal bracing, the MUIB Allograft aims to provide a balance between biological reconstruction and immediate mechanical reinforcement.
